There's something to be said for the notion that a longer film - with more fully-developed characters and greater room for narrative expression - can feel much shorter than a similar film which, ironically, actually is shorter. Quite fortunately, this can be said for the newly-released director's cut of Troy - a film, which at two hours and forty-five minutes, felt under-developed, plodding and incomplete. However, at three hours and fifteen minutes - exactly thirty minutes longer than the original cut - the film flies by in a seemingly-brief, engrossingly-epic whirlwind of Grecian violence and legitimate drama. Surprisingly, indeed, for a movie which seemed like the barest sketch of a greater film - rich in action, yet lacking in character, meaning, motivation or care - this director's cut breathes new life into the piece, eschewing the comparatively PG-13 nature of the original for an unrated, untethered experience without restriction. Director Wolfgang Petersen freely admits to this initial cut being the victim of studio interference - a summer release date; a teen-friendly rating; a drive to be less sexy, less violent and more 'audience-acceptable.' And if this new DVD had never hit the market, we never would have known that in making these edits, Petersen had effectively torn the spine from an otherwise worthwhile film.
What's different? In a word - everything. With thirty minutes of new footage, the film takes more time to develop its characters - allowing viewers to more fully connect with why these mortal humans and iconic heroes have done what they've done; killed who they've killed; sacrificed what they've sacrificed.

The film breathes more, taking a moment of narrative pause - spending a scene or two with its soon-to-be victors and victims - before the major action beats, so that when the violence arrives, it delivers with a greater, more forceful impact. And the violence itself is more pronounced here. Gone are the hints of human brutality, replaced, rather, with real blood and honest viscera. Not a slash, but a gaping wound. Not a tender line of blood around the neck, but a fully-formed decapitation. And, more importantly, none of it seems cheap. It's never gore for the sake of gore - but, rather, evidence of the price of war.
The same, in a sense, can be said of the film's sexuality, which is slightly more evident here. A few additional moments of nudity help to underscore a love scene, or highlight the apathy with which Achilles meets his women, or simply to illustrate the historical culture.
